Common auto electrical jobs in Whyalla

The original Whyalla sits right on the water, with older housing, the shops along Patterson Street and Darling Terrace, and the marina and boat ramp just below the hill. Older cars, salt air and boats set the mix here.

Corrosion on cars parked by the water

Streets close to the foreshore cop salt spray whenever the wind comes off the gulf. It works its way into battery terminals, fuse boxes under the bonnet and the earth points between engine, body and battery. Odd faults that come and go, like a flickering dash or a slow crank on cold mornings, often trace back to one of these connections. A yearly clean and a smear of terminal protector is cheap insurance in this part of town.

Boat trailers from the marina ramp

With the marina, sailing club and boat ramp at the bottom of Hummock Hill, plenty of local trailers go into salt water every weekend. Incandescent globes and unsealed sockets don't last long under those conditions. Swapping to submersible LED lights and running a fresh earth wire fixes most problems for good. If only some lights work, or they all glow dimly together, the earth is the first thing to check. Our guide on trailer lights that aren't working walks through it.

Older cars and short trips

A lot of driving in the old town is short: to the shops on Patterson Street, down to the foreshore and back. Short runs don't give the alternator long enough to top the battery up, and older cars often have small parasitic draws that add up. If your car is slow to crank after a couple of days parked, have the battery load-tested and the charging voltage checked before buying a new one.

Cooling fans and aircon relays

A hot northerly in summer quickly shows up weak aircon. If the air goes warm while you are stopped at the lights on the Lincoln Highway but cools again once you get moving, the condenser fan is the usual suspect. A failed fan relay, a blown fuse or a tired fan motor are all common and are electrical fixes. Gas leaks and recharges need a licensed technician.

Whyalla auto electrical questions

Why do my battery terminals keep going crusty living near the Whyalla foreshore?

Salt air speeds up the reaction at the battery posts, especially if a terminal is slightly loose or the battery is venting gas. Clean the posts and clamps with a baking soda and water mix, rinse, dry and tighten them firmly. Then coat them with terminal protector spray. If the crust returns within weeks, have the battery and charging voltage checked, because overcharging also causes it.

My boat trailer lights work at home but fail after a launch. Why?

Water is getting into a connection, usually a light housing, the plug or a joiner under the drawbar. Once wet, the circuit shorts or loses its earth, then works again when it dries out. Submersible LED lights, heat-shrink sealed joins and a quality plug stop most of it. Unplug the trailer before backing into the water so the lights are not powered while wet.

Local tip for Whyalla

If you launch from the boat ramp below Hummock Hill, keep a spray bottle of fresh water in the car. Give the trailer lights, plug and tow ball wiring a quick rinse before you leave the car park, then dry and spray the plug pins at home. Five minutes after each trip stops most of the corrosion that leads to failed lights and fines.
