Suburbs in Whyalla Norrie

Whyalla Norrie, Whyalla Stuart and Whyalla Jenkins were laid out as the city grew west in the steel boom of the 1960s and 70s, and together they hold most of the population. Norrie has Westland Shopping Centre, the TAFE and university campus and the main sporting grounds; Stuart and Jenkins are mostly family housing running out toward the Middleback Range. About 55 km north-west, Iron Knob sits beside the Eyre Highway, where through traffic heads for the Nullarbor. The work moves from school-run cars and caravans in town to outback touring setups on the highway.

Common auto electrical jobs in Whyalla Norrie

Family cars, towing and long-distance driving shape most of the work across Whyalla's western suburbs and out to Iron Knob.

Caravans and camper trailers

From the western suburbs it is a short run to the Eyre Peninsula coast, the Flinders Ranges or the Nullarbor, and plenty of driveways here have a van or camper parked beside the car. The usual faults are a van battery that won't charge while towing, a seven-pin plug with a broken pin, or brakes that don't respond because the controller was never set up properly. Our guide on caravan batteries not charging while towing covers the common causes.

Batteries in dry heat

Heat, not cold, kills most batteries in Whyalla. High under-bonnet temperatures through a long summer speed up the chemical wear inside, and a battery that tested fine in autumn can fail without warning the next summer. If your battery is more than three or four years old, have it tested before summer and before any long trip. Our guide on how to test a car battery shows what the numbers mean.

Driving lights for the highways

Once you leave town on the Lincoln Highway or head up Iron Knob Road to the Eyre Highway, there are long stretches with no street lighting and wildlife near the road. Good driving lights or a light bar help, but they need to be wired through a relay with a fuse, use cable heavy enough for the current, and be aimed so they don't dazzle oncoming drivers. Check the rules for mounting and switching before you fit them.
